Pantone's Color of the Year 2026: White. Why Did It Cause Controversy and Why Was It Inevitable?

On December 4th, Pantone announced the color it predicts will be the most used in 2025.

And, as expected, this announcement was met with reactions from various quarters.

The reason was simple, but the debate was profound: Pantone had declared a shade of white as the color of the year.

At the heart of the reactions was the question: "Is white really a color?"

It's clearly impossible that the Pantone Color of the Year Board didn't anticipate these reactions.

Because Pantone doesn't just look at aesthetics or visual trends when determining the color of the year.

Their main field of study is sociology . Human behavior, societal expectations, collective mood…

Therefore, when it comes to human behavior, the scientific debate about whether white is a color or not largely loses its meaning.

If society perceives white as a color and uses it as such, then that color has a sociological presence.

The world we live in has been undergoing a very rapid and drastic transformation for the past five years. This transformation has left societies with a heavy sense of uncertainty .

We used to be able to make plans for the future.

Today, no matter where we live in the world, making long-term plans is almost impossible.

The world has never before experienced such an unpredictable period regarding the future. Uncertainty and loss of control are not emotions that the human spirit can easily cope with.

And right at this point…

Our homes, our fortresses, have been transformed into shelters .

That's why everything related to our homes has become much more important than before.

We are paying more attention, we are giving more care.

Because that's the only place where we can leave uncertainty out.

Our homes are places where we can spend quality, peaceful time with our families and loved ones, feeling safe and secure.

Let's go back to the beginning…

When the unease created by uncertainty combined with the desire to be prepared for the future, the common need that emerged was this:

To calm down. To slow down. To find peace.

And this need came along with the shades of white she held in her hand.

If we pay a little attention, we can see this very clearly in our daily lives.

Lately, our most preferred colors have been natural, light, and bright tones.

We tend to reach for white bed linens, white shirts, and light-colored trousers more often.

Even in the stories told by the influencers we follow, the color palettes used are calmer, softer, and lighter.

This inner desire for security, foresight, and the tranquility we seek has led to white emerging as one of the most powerful colors of 2026.

Pantone also explains this process in detail in the content it shared on its website.

Now, let me get to my personal opinion…

Quite positive.

Before the color was announced, I had shared that I was expecting a shade of blue for 2026.

I had linked this expectation, from a sociological perspective, to a search for social tranquility and peace.

It makes a lot of sense to me that the underlying structure of the color that was revealed is also based on the same background.

The fact that the first image used to introduce the color depicted a cloudy blue atmosphere further supported this prediction.

In such a chaotic world, what we need is actually very simple:

A little peace. A little tranquility.

Just as we cannot separate color preferences from social behaviors, we cannot separate shopping behaviors and consumption preferences.

If our color is white, which represents peace, purity, and tranquility, it means our consumption choices are also filtered, simplified, and more conscious.

That's why it's crucial not to overlook these details when creating collections, products, brands, and strategies.

Stay well and with love.
